Stop At: MacDonnell Ranges, West MacDonnell National Park, Northern Territory Australia

After pickup at your Alice Springs hotel, set off with your guide and small group into West MacDonnell National Park to begin your exploration of the area’s many natural attractions. Throughout the day, your knowledgeable guide shares informative commentary about the natural and cultural history to the region.

Stop At: Simpsons Gap, Burt Plain NT 0872, Australia

Start with a scenic walk at Simpsons Gap, one of the most renowned gaps in the West MacDonnell Ranges. Follow a riverbed to a natural rock amphitheater while looking for endangered black-footed rock wallabies that hop among the boulders.

Stop At: Standley Chasm Angkerle, Larapinta Drive, West MacDonnell National Park, Northern Territory 0872 Australia

Then admire the tall rock walls of Standley Chasm as you stroll through trees that line the tracks including acacias, cycads, ghost gums and cypress pines. Have morning tea at Standley Chasm before heading to your next destination, the Ochre Pits.

Stop At: Ochre Pits, Burt Plain, Northern Territory Australia

A short path leads to rock walls that are covered with white, yellow and red layers of ochre. Be sure to bring your camera to snap photos of the shifting hues. Considered a sacred site for the local Arrernte peoples, the ochre pits provided material traditionally used for ceremonies and trading.

Stop At: Ormiston Gorge, Namatjira Drive, West MacDonnell National Park, Northern Territory Australia

Further down the road, stop for a picnic lunch at Ormiston Gorge, which contains a semi-permanent waterhole. Look for waterbirds such as the Pacific heron and white-faced heron, both common visitors to the waterhole.

Stop At: Mount Sonder, Northern Territory Australia

Next, head to Mt Sonder lookout and admire the spectacular landscape including a towering sandstone wall and views of Mt Sonder, one of the highest points in Central Australia.

Stop At: Ellery Creek Big Hole, West MacDonnell National Park, Alice Springs, Northern Territory Australia

Continue to Ellery Creek Big Hole, a significant geological site and one of central Australia's most pristine waterholes and cool off with a swim.

I went on this tour in December 2019. Sorry I didn't realise you could leave reviews otherwise I would have done so earlier. This is a fantastic trip, it was well spaced out with enough time at each place to get a feel for what we were looking at, take pictures etc. The guide we had was a delight and knowledgeable about anything on the northern territory. He spent the whole trip talking about things we were passing, the history of the area and passed on some local indigenous knowledge to us. Even gave me some advice on where else I can go/see on my trip to the Alice and Uluru. I will treasure this trip for a lifetime, I just wish I could remember our guides name. For other people going on trips like this-they pick you up and drop you off at your hotel and there is PLENTY of food provided at the various stops. I'd probably bring a hat, 1L water bottle, sunscreen and other essentials, though I'm pretty sure our tour bus had water too.

Fantastic day full of history & beauty. Karen was our tour guide& driver & she was amazing. I could not have found & seen what we managed after driving many miles on my own. This is a perfect way to see as much as possible in a day.

Bluey, the fountain of all knowledge. How lucky were we to not only have Bluey as a great driver but also the depth of knowledge he had about the geology and the Aranda people and their culture. We left immersed with knowledge. Thank you Bluey.

'Bluey', our guide was fantastic. Lots of information, delivered in a great way to make your day fun, but also informative. We went to many gorgeous places, which when armed with the stories associated with them, provides you with a whole new appreciation and understanding of what you are seeing. Our day started off quite bleak and cool, but warmed up to a very enjoyable temp. The lunch was self made wraps, fresh and healthy, which I personally appreciated. Well done Emu Run Tours. We both really enjoyed the day.

My partner and I booked onto this trip through the Alice Springs visitor centre. Emma was an incredible guide, so friendly and lovely to talk to, and constantly providing us with knowledge and insights into the wildlife throughout the day. It was super enjoyable and fun, and it’s always special when you can tell the guide loves what they’re talking about. Thank you again :)

We were booked with another tour operator who let us down at the last minute. However, we were very happy to have been able to book into this tour through the Alice Springs Tourist Centre. It was a wonderful day in various locations of the Wes Macdonnell Ranges, and the tour guide and bus driver Emma was brilliant. She was very knowledgeable and highly personable and a credit to Emu Run Tours. I would definitely recommend this to tourists in Central Australia.
